Decathlon closes a branch in Berlin Central Station

The French sporting goods retailer Decathlon is reducing its presence in the federal capital. Last Monday, the company announced that it would be closing its store in Berlin Central Station. The last opening day is therefore April 8th. After that, Decathlon will still be represented with seven branches in the city. The retailer has more than 80 stores throughout Germany.

According to the company, the decision to give up the 300 square meter “Connect Store” in Berlin’s main train station was made in the course of a route analysis of the location network. “Decathlon regularly reviews the existing branch portfolio in terms of location, size and product range,” says a statement.

Marcus Hellwig, the regional manager at Decathlon Germany, justified the measure with the most recent expansion steps in the capital: “We opened the Connect Store in 2018. We are now very well represented in Berlin with seven other branches on a total sales area of almost 20,000 square meters. These offer sufficient space to present our large selection of products and to offer test areas,” he explained in a statement.
