Debuting Owusu-Oduro beams despite loss: “Wanted to make my family proud”

Rome Jayden Owusu-Oduro made his first minutes in professional football on behalf of Jong AZ tonight. Unfortunately, the talented 18-year-old goalkeeper was unable to prevent Maarten Martens’ team from losing 1-0 to Eindhoven on his debut. “Mixed feeling. Proud, but unfortunately not a good result.”

The young goalkeeper, who shone last season on behalf of the Under 18 of AZ in the Youth League, could look back on a strong game. “In terms of goalkeeping, I showed myself well. I had a few good saves,” says Owusu-Oduro after the game. “Football went a little less, but I think I stood my ground. It’s a shame about the result, but I’m proud of the team.”

“We dominated in the second half. It is a shame that we conceded a goal in the last five seconds of the first half. That was very unfortunate. In the end we lost unnecessarily,” said Owuso-Oduro about the narrow defeat.

Unnecessary defeat

Young AZ coach Maarten Martens was really annoyed afterwards that his team left the field with zero points. “The 1-0 fell at a crucial moment. That was a shame and I think it was preceded by a handball”, said Martens, who was booked for protesting the opening goal. “In the end we lost unnecessarily, but it is going too far to say that we deserved three points here.”
