Flick’s winning streak as national coach continues against Israel. The younger players in particular stand out. A world champion falls short of expectations.

2-0 in the first international match of the year, lots of light, little shadow – the German national team started the World Cup year with a sense of achievement. Several players were able to excel against Israel, and national coach Hansi Flick was also impressed by his team’s performance.

“I’m satisfied,” said the 57-year-old after the game. “We played very courageously and pressed hard. All in all, you can be satisfied with all parts of the team. I think it’s great how the team has rewarded itself. Eight games, six set-piece goals – that’s something to be proud of.”

Attacker Timo Werner also took positives from the game. “After four months it was a good performance for the first game of the new year. Things aren’t going the way I’d like at Chelsea. It’s all the nicer that I have the confidence here. Maybe the game suits me better here, I feel pretty well here.”

You can read about who still felt comfortable in the DFB team in the slide show above or here.
