Debby (42) from Heemskerk lived on food parcels, now she helps out

From a single mother on social assistance to a self-employed entrepreneur who is happy in love. Until last year, Debby ter Brink from Heemskerk still received Christmas packages from Rocking Up X-Mas, but because she managed to find her way up, she now has the opportunity to help with that organization.

Until last year, Debby ter Brink from Heemskerk was a single mother on social assistance with two children. It was a challenge for the 42-year-old to give her children a Merry Christmas. Every cent counted and it was difficult to support two children on just one income.

This year is the first time in a long time that she no longer needs support. A lot has changed in 2023. Not only does she now work as an empowerment coach for women, she also has a new partner and now lives together in Alkmaar.

How did you first come into contact with Rocking Up X-Mas?

“When my kids were in primary school, they heard about a new organization, Rocking Up to receive packages. Every little bit helped our little family.”

What feeling did receiving a Christmas package give you?

“The first time I didn’t know what was happening to me. Our holidays were not such a luxury. At Christmas we were surprised with two large packages full of food and a bag full of toys for my children. By an ‘anonymous donor’ we received these boxes. I really cried when I saw that. It was such a strange feeling that people would grant you this. There was simply not that much money, so buying presents or tasty food was difficult for me. The food was also something I normally wouldn’t buy. So we got duck, which I would never buy myself. That was way too expensive for me.”

Now you will no longer receive Christmas packages. How did you get out of that situation?

“I met my current partner, so I no longer needed social assistance. I also started as a self-employed entrepreneur. It is of course easier to live with two incomes. We also live together in Alkmaar, so I can no longer get in eligible for the packages. It is a mixed feeling not to receive that anymore. My package is now being given to someone who needs it more, which is a nice feeling.”

You also wanted to give something back?

“I think it is important that as many children and families as possible have a happy Christmas, including people living in poverty. Now I am committed to sharing the social media posts on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. As a result, three new people have signed up to donate, that is only positive. I now also donate money, food and items. I made my first donation in September, which gave me such a strange feeling. Every little bit helps and it is fantastic to now be able to give something back to be able to give.”
