DEBATE OF THE DAY. Is a shorter summer vacation a good idea? This is your opinion | Domestic

Veronique Dhondt: “It might be better to consult management and support staff. Registrations for next school year will be accepted at the beginning of July. How else can you submit your teaching assignments for the next school year? Two weeks before the school year starts, there is still some work to be done to get everything organized! So no, no shorter vacation!”

Maarten Cambre: “Our education used to be world-class, with the normal summer holidays in July and August. So don’t tell me that the summer holidays are a problem that is the cause of the current free fall in the OECD rankings. We need to stop trying to reform everything to pieces. Let children be children in the summer. They are proud of that. Life is more than just performing.”

Natasja Timmerman: “Leave the holidays as they are. It is more fun to be at home in nice weather than in rainy and changeable weather. Both child and parent benefit from not being at the school gate for two months. Yes, it is a bit of a puzzle to find shelter, but it has been possible for years.”

Alexis De Kocker: “Why does this have to change again? Due to all the tinkering over the years, the level of education has fallen. Leave things as they are. The party(ies) that are in favor will not get my vote.”

Jan Verplancken: “A very good idea to extend the spring and autumn holidays by a week at the expense of the main holiday. Do not hesitate! Doing! These two periods become full-fledged holidays during which something can be organised. Great idea!”

Steve Delanghe: “Not a good idea. The big holiday starts on July 1. Why are the students already free a week in advance? The same with the Easter and Christmas holidays. Due to a teacher shortage, it rarely happens that they have a full week of lessons. That wasn’t the case in the past. You can postpone your holiday as much as you want, that won’t help. First, ensure that effective teaching takes place on every school day.”

Ann Speleers: “I was in the first grade for years. The short holidays, autumn and spring, were already a problem for the weaker students. You also had to pick up the others again after a week’s leave. So if you add an extra week at home, I believe that you will need much more time to refresh the learning material. So no, I am not in favor of shortening summer vacations and extending vacations during the school year.”

Lorenzo Ceci: “Today’s adults have had July and August holidays for their entire school career. Weren’t we glad and happy? Have many of us not obtained a diploma? Let parents also take their responsibility. Provide a holiday book, watch Ketnet, register your child with a youth organization, etc., so that your child comes into contact with other Dutch-speaking children. This is referred to as a disadvantage. The first weeks of September are repetitive.”

Tom Debraekeleer: “It is a symbolic file that solves nothing. In our Flemish education we are not succeeding in closing the gap between stronger and weaker students. In no other European country is that gap so great. That has nothing to do with school holidays. They used to be there too, and they were the same length. It has much more to do with the influx of foreign speakers. In French-speaking education, the holiday periods have been adjusted in this way. Without noticeable learning gains at the moment.”
