Death toll rising rapidly after earthquake in Afghanistan: at least 250 dead | Abroad

At least 255 people have been killed in a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that hit Afghanistan on Tuesday night.

Mohammad Nassim Haqqani, the head of the Taliban government’s emergency response service, said most of the casualties were in the eastern Paktika province in the border region with Pakistan. Deaths have also been reported in nearby Nangarhar and Khost provinces.

Pakistani authorities said the quake had a magnitude of 6.1, while the US USGS reported a magnitude of 5.9 and a weaker aftershock.

The earthquake happened at a depth of 10 kilometers. According to USGS, the epicenter was about 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Khost, near the Pakistani border.

According to Pakistani sources, the quake was also felt far in the country, such as in the capital Islamabad and also in Lahore in the east. No reports have yet been made about possible casualties and damage in Pakistan.
