Death toll in Philippines from storm Megi continues to rise | Abroad

More than 200,000 people have been displaced. They have been received in evacuation centers. Much damage has been done to agriculture, houses and infrastructure. According to the disaster agency, the damage is estimated at 257 million pesos (converted more than 4.5 million euros). In total, 2 million inhabitants, spread over thirty provinces, were affected by the storm.

Most of the deaths were in Leyte province, about 600 kilometers southeast of the capital Manila. At least 156 people were killed there. In the towns of Baybay and Abuyog, entire neighborhoods were destroyed. More than 300 rescue team personnel are still searching for missing persons, the vast majority of whom are from these two areas.

Storm Megi made landfall a week ago. It is the first tropical storm of the annual storm season. The country is hit by an average of 20 storms a year.
