Death toll Ian rises to 77, 1 million people still without power

The death toll in the United States from Hurricane Ian has risen to at least 77, television channel NBC reports. The hurricane left a trail of destruction over the southern states of Florida and North and South Carolina in recent days. Florida was especially hard hit. There were also the most fatalities, at least 66. The other deaths were in North Carolina.

More than a million people in the state have still been without power since Wednesday, when Ian made landfall in Florida. Insurers estimate the damage in Florida at least 63 billion dollars, converted more than 64 billion euros. Some coastal towns have been completely destroyed, according to aerial images from CNN.

Since Saturday morning, Ian has lost a lot of strength. The storm is currently moving across Virginia toward the Atlantic Ocean, where the US National Weather Service is expected to settle sometime Sunday morning.

The problems have not disappeared for the southern states. The National Weather Service warns that it will continue to rain heavily in Ian’s wake on Sunday, which could lead to local flooding. And Florida has to reckon with flooding until next week as rivers struggle to drain all the rainwater.
