Death toll from storm Ciarán rises to 15, costs due to damage in the Netherlands are not too bad | Domestic

The death toll from Storm Ciarán in Europe has risen to fifteen. Three people died off the Portuguese coast when their sailing boat under the Danish flag capsized. The bodies of two men and a woman washed up on a beach in the center of the country. In the Netherlands, insurers assume a damage amount of around 15 million euros due to the storm.

Five people were killed in the Italian region of Tuscany after heavy thunderstorms with heavy rain. A 5-year-old child of Ukrainian descent and a 64-year-old German tourist were killed in Ghent (Belgium). Two people were also killed in France. In the Netherlands, a man died from a falling tree in Venray. People also died this way in Germany and Spain.

15 million damage

Storm Ciarán, which passed through our country on Thursday, caused approximately 15 million euros in damage in our country, the Dutch Association of Insurers reports. This is evident from an initial estimate by the organization. The damage was caused to homes, cars and commercial buildings.

Based on this estimate, the insured claim burden appears to be less than expected, the association says. This does not alter the fact that the storm ’caused a lot of inconvenience and suffering’ locally.

The exact extent of the damage cannot yet be calculated because not all claims for damages have yet been submitted to insurers, the association reports. The estimate made is a so-called model estimate, which does not yet take specific damages into account.

Also damage on Friday

It is also raining and blowing quite a bit on Friday. The association warns of possible consequential damage that this wind can cause. Roof tiles and solar panels that came loose due to gusts of wind on Thursday and trees that were uprooted could still blow off or fall on Friday or later.
