Someone was killed in a serious accident that took place around four o’clock on Saturday night on the access road to the A59 near Waalwijk-Oost. The police announced this on Sunday morning.
The victim was a passenger in a car whose driver lost control in the driveway for an unknown reason. Then the car, which contained several people, veered out of the bend. The car ended up on its side in a ditch at the bottom of the slope. The victim ended up under the car.
Emergency services responded en masse to provide first aid. Several people were taken to hospitals in ambulances.
Under the influence
The driver of the car ran off after the crash, but a short time later this man, a 28-year-old Pole with no known permanent place of residence in the Netherlands, was arrested. The man was wet and covered in mud.
He is suspected of leaving the scene of an accident, causing a fatal collision and driving without a license. An initial test showed that the man was also under the influence of narcotics.
Entrance and exit closed for the time being
As far as the police now know, no traffic was involved in the crash.
The entrance and exit at Waalwijk-Oost in the direction of Raamsdonksveer was closed until eleven o’clock on Sunday morning after the accident.
