The deaf Rahul Sahu fell into a well in the village of Pihrid, in northeast India, last Friday while playing near his home. Rescue workers rushed to the scene to retrieve the child from the very narrow 24m-deep hole.
Using cranes, about 150 rescue workers spent four days digging a path to the bottom of the shaft. Meanwhile, rescuers monitored Rahul with cameras and were able to bring food down. An oxygen tube helped the boy breathe. Since Rahul cannot speak or hear, it was even more difficult for rescuers to keep in touch with him. But according to rescuers, “his condition continued to be good.”
After the boy was freed, he was taken to hospital.
