One person died on Sunday during the open Dutch Highland Games championships in Geldrop. It concerns a 65-year-old man from Geldrop. That’s what the police report.
After the accident, which happened shortly before noon, several emergency services, including a trauma helicopter, were called. However, the victim could not be saved.
Tree trunk throw and hammer throw
The victim was hit by a metal ball used during a game, the so-called hammer throw. This is one of the components of the open Dutch Highland Games championship. Tree trunk throwing is one of the other parts. National and international powerhouses participate in the event. The Highland Games are part of the Schots & Scheef weeks in Geldrop.
Visitor ornamental garden
According to the duty officer, the victim would have been a visitor to the ornamental garden next to the site where the Highland Games took place. The metal ball would have flown over a hedge. According to the officer on duty, few people would have seen the fatal accident happen.
The police have called in Victim Support for people who need it. Part of the site has been cordoned off for research.
