Daniele De Rossi won the defamation lawsuit brought against the newspaper La Repubblica, the director in charge of the time and the journalists Carlo Bonini and Marco Mensurati, editors of the article entitled “The revolt of De Rossi and the three senators against Totti” and subtitled ” A dark season, the dismissal of coach Di Francesco and the mysterious farewell to the captain: this is what really happened” published by the newspaper on 30 May 2019. “The article – explains De Rossi in a statement – supposed a frond inside of the club during the season and had a great impact and created a lot of controversy, in Rome and in the world of football, given the caliber of the personalities, the great, old and proven friendship between Totti and me (who became manager, ed), as well as the relationship that bound me, at the time captain of Roma, and coach Di Francesco”. De Rossi had immediately contested the reconstruction defined as “conspiracy theorist” and “totally false, defamatory and harmful to his honor and his reputation” asking the newspaper for an apology and an immediate correction. Since his requests were not collected, a lawsuit for “defamation and damage to honor and reputation” followed. On 16 May 2023, the Court of Rome agreed with the player, represented by the lawyer Antonio Conte and his law firm, and sentenced the newspaper, the director and the two journalists to pay damages for an amount of 27,000 euros plus the payment of legal fees (about 9,000 euros).

As already announced by De Rossi at the time of the lawsuit, the entire sum will be donated to the Bambin Gesù hospital in Rome if the lawsuit is won. De Rossi commented as follows: “It has been demonstrated that those infamous reconstructions that had deeply hurt and embittered me were totally false. No one will give me back the serenity I lost during that period, when I was accused of behavior light years away from my human and professional history. My only consolation is that the oncological department of the Bambin Gesù will benefit from the result of this lawsuit”.
