De Peiling: in addition to compulsory education, there should also be a compulsory movement

Young people move less and less. According to sports director Joop Alberda, compulsory exercise – in addition to compulsory education – would be an excellent solution. What do you think? Is such an obligation to move a good idea? And wouldn’t this also be a good idea for the elderly? Join the conversation in De Peiling!

Young people are moving less and less, especially after the corona crisis. From research by Statistics Netherlands it appears that in 2019, more than three-quarters of young people still exercised monthly, but that has dropped to 65 percent in 2021. In addition, the number of members of sports associations also decreased.

Move obligation

Reason enough for sports director Joop Alberda to argue for a duty to move: “Since we already have compulsory education anyway, it does not have to be terribly complicated to shape the compulsory exercise in practice through education. (…) There is a lot of talk about the number of compulsory lessons for gymnastics education, but in the In practice, it is far too little of it.”

According to Joop, this should apply in addition to compulsory education: “Within compulsory education, everyone can choose what the curriculum looks like, as long as you meet compulsory education. In the same way, the government can force adolescents to exercise. know for yourself.”

What do you think?

Do you think such a duty to move is a good idea? Or is this a form of patronizing? And shouldn’t such a duty to exercise also apply to people over the age of 60? Exercise is also crucial for the health of adults and the elderly.
