De Peiling: I also take the car for short trips

The car, or rather the bicycle? For a short trip to work, the gym or the store, most people often take the car out of force of habit. That is why the government is coming up with the new one today campaign: “Short ride? That’s so cycled”

The government campaign, which will run for three years, should ensure that an additional 100,000 people cycle to work by early 2025. In 2027, there should be 20 percent more cycling than in 2017.

Cycling country

Our country is a real cycling country, a quarter of all journeys are made by bicycle, and that is nowhere in the world that high. Our country also has more bicycles than inhabitants. Yet half of all car journeys are shorter than 7.5 kilometres. With the campaign ‘Short ride? The government wants to point out to motorists that cycling is healthier and cheaper. Last year, the government earmarked 780 million euros for better bicycle facilities, such as bicycle sheds and cycle paths. Bicycle safety is also improved.

What do you think?

Do you leave the car for a short ride? Do you do this for environmental reasons or do you think it’s important to be active? And what about the bicycle facilities in your area?
