Maseo and Posdnuos, the remaining members of De La Soul, paid tribute to their bandmate David Jolicoeur on Instagram. He died on February 12 at the age of 54, the cause of death has not yet been clarified. Recently he spoke openly about his problems with heart failure.
In his message, Maseo gave way to his pain, saying his soul hurts and it’s crazy to write about Jolicoeur in the past tense. The rapper thanked him posthumously for “getting a bird’s eye view of our collective vision of being a group.” Posdnuos wrote that Jolicoeur was the heart of the group. He brought “a lot of creativity, energy and passion” to music and his influence will be felt for a long time.
The death of Trugoy the Dove, Jolicoeur’s stage name, is a great loss for the entire hip-hop community. He “lies heavy on our hearts and minds,” but his bandmates would try to remember the good times they had together.
“On the one hand, I’m glad you’re no longer suffering the pain of your condition, but on the other hand, I’m extremely upset by the fact that you’re not here to celebrate and enjoy what we are so for worked hard and fought hard,” Maseo wrote. After a two-year dispute with Tommy Boy Records, De La Soul got their master recordings back in August 2021. In January 2023, the group announced that the first six albums would be available again on streaming platforms from March.
De La Soul formed in Long Island in 1988. Her debut album 3 Feet High and Rising was released a year later. It is considered one of the most influential hip-hop records of the time. And the Anonymous Nobody was last released in 2016.
