De Korenbloem has a chance to win award for best group housing

De Korenbloem offers small-scale living for elderly people with dementia, but also for those who are diagnosed at a young age.

The entire project by Studio Jan Vermeulen and Tom Thys Architects in Brussels now has a chance to win the Belgian Building Award for group housing. Homeliness and contact with the environment are central.

No departments, but homes

“We have built on a small scale and we are not talking about departments but about homes. We have two different target groups, the elderly and young people with dementia. The architect has succeeded in shaping our vision,” says Kristof Claeys of De Korenbloem. And De Korenbloem is also in the spotlight in Europe. It is the only Belgian project to be nominated for the Bauhaus Prize.

Another West Flemish project that has been nominated is the social residential neighborhood Schaerdeke in Lo-Reninge, which takes the rural environment into account.
