Alan Ibrahimagic will continue to look after the German basketball players after the failure of national coach Alex Mumbru at the European Championships in the two upcoming group games against Sweden and Lithuania. The DBB team seems in good hands with him.

It is rarely a good sign if the team doctor for the press conference of the German team appears on the second day of the tournament. But there are also extraordinary circumstances among the German basketball players: The fact that a head coach has to be taken to the hospital with the emergency car at the beginning of a European championship and failed for an indefinite period, had not yet existed at the DBB team.

Oliver Pütz, team doctor of the German basketball players, gave information about the well -being of Alex Mumbru for the first time at the media round on Thursday afternoon at the team hotel. He spoke of an “acute abdomen”, a problem in the abdomen that led to an emergency situation. He did not want to give more specific information about the diagnosis.

DBB doctor: Mumbru continues to fail

The national coach will be in the University Hospital of Tampere “Excellent cared for”so Pütz. The situation is not life -threatening, the coach could also follow the games. “We have to wait for further development from day to day.”

When the national coach can join the team again is still uncertain. In the next two games, against Sweden on Friday and Saturday against Lithuania (at 12.30 p.m.), Mumbru will definitely not be on the sidelines, Team doctor Pütz confirmed. Also for the two final group games in the coming week on Monday and Wednesday, Mumbrus returns, Pütz said. This means that the Spaniard can probably take over his position again at the earliest for the KO games in Riga.

Winning shower for Mumbru deputy Ibrahimagic

The rest of the team has obviously arranged itself well with the uncertain situation around the chief coach. The sovereign opening victory against Montenegro certainly had its share in this. Co-coach Alan Ibrahimagic, Mumbrus Deputy, was celebrated in the cabin by the players with the water shower obligatory.

This met the DBB coach unprepared, as he said on Thursday: “I was a bit naive”said Ibrahimagic, who had probably thought of a lot of things in his unexpected debut, but no longer of this tradition.“Of course it was a nice feeling that we also won the first game.”

Also with the struck Isaac Bonga there was an all -clear from the coach that he assumes that he could play against Sweden. Ibrahimagic also gave an insight into the relaxed atmosphere on the first game -free day after the start of the tournament. The game consoles in the Players area in the hotel would be used well by the players, there are more spectators around it than with some games at Eurobasket, said the 47 -year -old coach with a smile.

Ibrahimagic convinces as Mumbru deputy

In the first, turbulent days of Tampere, the assistant coach left the impression that the team is very good with him as long as the regular national coach has to expose. He also obviously enjoys respect for the players. Before the start, captain Dennis Schröder emphasized the merits of the long-time DBB junior coach, who won the European Championship title last year with the U18 national team. At the U19 World Cup in July, Ibrahimagics team only had to give up the United States in the final.

Many of the current internationals already know the coach from their time at the junior selection teams. Ibrahimagic has been a national coach at the association since 2013, and he also has a large part in the upswing of the German national team as a talent developer.

He is much more than a temporary coach for the players. The mood under Ibrahimagic is very good, said Maodo Lo in the Sportschau interview. At the same time, according to the playmaker, the players hoped that Mumbrus will continue to improve health. “We simply focus on the next game and try to continue to master the situation well.

Games against Sweden and Lithuania within 24 hours

The game against Sweden, at the unusually early time on Friday afternoon, was actually intended to warm up for the directly subsequent duel against Lithuania, which was not set 24 hours later. The Lithuanians are considered the hardest competitor in the race for group victory. However, the Swedes appeared surprisingly strongly at their start of the European Championship against host Finland and only lost in the last seconds.

Nobody was found in the DBB team who wanted to talk about the supposed group final against Lithuania. Mumbru deputy Ibrahimagic also focused on the Sweden game. Above all, the team had to defend better than for a half against Montengro: “The Swedes have shown that they have a lot of quality offensive. It will be a hard piece of work.”
