DB Navigator: Deutsche Bahn app with update problems

For a few weeks, when using the DB Navigator app, the message appeared that it would soon receive an update. Now it’s here – with a few technical problems. Read at TECHBOOK exactly where the problem is and what Deutsche Bahn itself has to say about it.

An app update usually aims to make it more intuitive or at least easier to use and possibly improve outdated functions. This was certainly the plan for the update of DB Navigator, the Deutsche Bahn (DB) app. But now that version 24.1.0 has been rolled out widely to its users’ devices, it is causing some problems.

DB Navigator – Update brings problems

You can literally call it “starting difficulties.” The DB Navigator update installs itself. However, in order to be able to use the app, you have to log in again – and there is already a problem here. According to a report from the news website, “HeiseMany users complain about error messages when trying to dial in. They say you should try again at a later date. The problems specifically affect the iOS operating systems and the Android variant LineageOS.

It usually works on the second login attempt. But some users complain about persistent problems. That may not sound serious at first. But of course it can be unpleasant if you started a trip with a ticket you purchased before the update and can’t access or show it in the DB Navigator app.

More technical errors

The updated app also has deficiencies in other areas. Like the login, DB Navigator apparently does not accept another default setting: stored rail cards. According to “Heise”, subscribers who actually receive discounts will see the regular connection prices when booking their tickets. This problem can be solved by re-uploading the discount or ticket into the updated app. But of course customers need to know that, and it definitely means certain circumstances.

This is how Deutsche Bahn reacts

TECHBOOK asked Deutsche Bahn. A spokeswoman there explains to us that 24.1.0 is a fundamental change to a completely new distribution system. “Isolated childhood illnesses” cannot be ruled out. The problems in the updated DB Navigator app should be fixed soon. Until then, DB employees should be able to provide assistance in the event of error messages.

Was the complex update even necessary?

The question remains whether the widely announced and apparently complex update to the app was really necessary. TECHBOOK had already tested the updated version in advance. And as TECHBOOK author Isa Kabakci discovered, it only brings a few real innovations. For example, the well-known savings price function is now displayed under the name “Best Price”. In addition, you can now access information about the train sequence and check in before you start your journey. Furthermore, the menu navigation is clearer and more intuitive, and you can also easily buy tickets for dogs and bicycles in the new DB Navigator version.

Technically, however, this results in the final move from the so-called “Next DB Navigator” to the DB Navigator. Although that shouldn’t cause any major problems, after all, DB Navigator is actually the original app…
