The damage to the bird specialty store and fish specialty store in Nieuw-Vennep is clearly visible this morning. The fire last night completely destroyed the building on the IJweg. Fish and birds have died in the fire, how many there are is not yet known. “Our life’s work destroyed within half an hour,” the owners write on their Facebook page.
The fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. and appeared to spread quickly. A spokesperson for the Safety Region informed NH Nieuws last night that the fire brigade kept the surrounding homes wet, so that the fire could not spread. The spreading fire therefore remained at the specialty store.
Victims
The victims were not people, but many animals. The present fish and birds from the fish and bird specialty store did not survive the fire. It is not yet known how many animals are involved.
The owners of the bird specialty store say on their Facebook page that ‘words fail’. “Without any kind of farewell, all our birds are gone.”
Cause
Despite the fire being brought under control quickly, the fire brigade still needed a few hours to extinguish the fire and to be able to carry out the demolition work.
It is too early to say whether the fire was caused by lightning, the spokesman said. Witnesses let NH Nieuws know that the storm was ‘still very far away’ at the time of the first report.
