The 17th edition of the Day of the Plow Horse in Orvelte was today the first time without founder Fokke Steen. He passed away a few days after the event last year. His wife Anita Melessen continues the tradition.
In a field just outside Orvelte the horses are ready to pull the plows. It should be a long straight trench. “You have to feel how a horse thinks,” explains Eite Oosterveld. He has been participating in the event for 16 years. Not this year for the first time. “I have a lame horse. You shouldn’t plow with that.” That is why he is present as a spectator.
Organizer Anita Melessen observes the plowing horses from the side. Everything is going well. The organization is in good hands with her. She always helped her husband. Last year, Fokke Steen was still able to attend the event, despite being seriously ill. “It was exciting whether he would make it,” says Anita. “Due to the bad weather, we had to postpone the event for a week.” It’s hard on her that he’s not here now. Still, she is happy to make his wish, the continuation of the Day of the Plow Horse, come true.
