Day 3 (US Open 2022)

19:44

Hardly to expect 60s

We addressed the difficult conditions and there are currently only 5 golfers under par. Andrew Putnam and Brandon Matthews are currently T16 through 1 under and are currently the top ranked active players on the course.

19:29

tirade

Justin Thomas is mad, really mad. The reason for this is that he basically had to hit from a fairway gully and the ball was just uneven. Despite an in-depth discussion, the ball had to stay where it was and the Englishman predictably missed the shot. We will not translate his choice of words here.

19:20

Highlight of Bramlett

Also further down the scoreboard is Joseph Bramlett. On the par 3 hole 16, his tee shot misses the green, but he casually chips onto the flag and into the hole from the second cut. This puts his total score at +4.

19:18

Hagestad off the roll

One who is really struggling with today’s conditions is USA’s Stewart Hagestad. Staying just above the cut line, he’s practically collecting bogeys these days. 2 doubles and 7 bogeys face only 2 birdies. 3 holes separate him from the clubhouse.

19:00

difficult conditions

Yesterday’s forecasts unfortunately come true: today there will be gusty winds and hard greens. Rounds below the 70 mark should be a rarity on Day 3.

18:58

Flight partner has to watch

Justin Rose, who is traveling with Dustin Johnson, has to gnash his teeth at this birdie. The Brit doesn’t hit the green with his approach and then needs both putts: bogey at the start!

18:42

Exclamation mark to start with

Great putt by DJ right on the 1st hole. The play equipment rolls over 6 meters at a comfortable temperature and falls to Birdie. Johnson is even overall and still has 35 more holes to catch up.

18:40

Cantlay must type

Nice birdie attempt by Patrick Cantlay, whose putt starved just inches from the hole. After bogey-bogey that would have been a good turnaround – but it’s still 2 over for Saturday.

18:38

Sinnot shows it

Australia’s Todd Sinnot birdies the 5 and is already 2 strokes under par for the day. And he’s already made the leap to T24. Another birdie would put him on 16, that’s how tight the leaderboard is today.

18:20

Great flights

Even in the late afternoon we get to see really great player pairings. Justin Rose and Dustin Thomas will both be teeing up this minute. They’re each 1 over par, so they’re 6 strokes behind.

18:16

Bookies love McIlroy

From a purely betting odds perspective, the Northern Irishman is the favorite for overall victory, just ahead of Jon Rahm. Both looked very good yesterday, getting out of tricky situations and impeccable on most holes.

18:13

Spieth with problems

Jordan Spieth is already on the way and is currently teeing off on the difficult 5. He started the day with a bogey and is still not really warming up to the course. 72 and 70 are recorded so far – and that with 9 birdies on the first two days.

18:11

Three so far under

There are currently 22 players on the course. Only 3 have improved on par so far: Denny McCarthy, Todd Sinnot and Grayson Murray. A lap in the 60’s can still make big leaps up the leaderboard today!

18:06

hard cut

The cut line of 3 over par caught some players off guard. Only 64 players are still on board on the third day. Shane Lowry, Jim Furyk, Billy Horschel, Tony Finau, Si Woo Kim, Cameron Smith, Louis Oosthuizen, Sam Horsfield, Branden Grace, Tommy Fleetwood or Viktor Hovland – many prominent names are no longer there.

18:04

German golfers had to pack

Yannik Paul and Marcel Schneider were the only German representatives in the tournament and had to pack their bags after the cut. After the 77 on the first day, Paul was able to make a good increase to 73. Schneider (78-79) was rather disappointed after his two rounds.

18:03

Large field of followers

But behind Dahmen and Morikawa lurk several players with 4 or 3 strokes under par. Among them Jon Rahm, last year’s winner, Rory McIlroy or Scottie Scheffler, the number 1 in the world rankings. So nothing is decided here: 10 players are only 1 or 2 strokes behind the leading duo.

18:01

Contested top

After 2 days we have a split lead: Collin Morikawa, who noted an excellent 66 yesterday with difficult pin positions, and Joel Dahmen, who is also 5 strokes under par after 67-68, go together at 21:45 German time to the Begin.

17:55

moving day

We’re calling back from the country club in Brookline. Day 3 of the US Open is on!
