Day 2 (The Open Championship 2022)

08:20

Kim, Gooch, Stenson

Slowly but surely s is becoming more prominent on the round. 2017 Players Championship winner Kim Si-woo has just completed his first tee shot. The South Korean is currently three under par. Talor Gooch (-4) follows in the next flight, then Henrik Stenson sets out. The 2016 Swedish Open champion has to deliver today after a 75 on day one if he wants to go into the weekend.

08:14

Maximum penalty for Li

For Haotong Li, after his crazy faux pas at the opening hole, it’s rock solid. In the second attempt, the Chinese misses his approach shot, then he misses a medium-length putt and starts with a triple bogey. You want to go straight back to the hotel.

08:10

Triston Lawrence gets going

With Triston Lawrence, the first player clearly under par is now starting his second round. The South African started with a 69 and is therefore tied for 13th. He is accompanied by Fabrizio Zanotti (E) and Alex Wrigley (+10).

08:05

Hello again

What a crazy thing! Haotong Li tries to hit the green on the one with his second shot and the ball lands right on the edge of the back wall of the small ditch in front of the flag. The cue ball then bounces back to his side and rolls back at high speed almost to where it started. The Chinese has the same shot in front of him and can hardly believe it.

07:58

Bairstow with the birdie

Yesterday, Barclay Brown, an amateur, impressed with a round of 68. Today it is also an amateur who provides the first highlight. Sam Bairstow starts with the first birdie of the day at one, going to -1.

07:55

The first bogey

Right at the start we see the first mistake. Jediah Morgan hits the green well on the second shot and narrowly misses the long put, but then fails to land the next try from under a meter. Tomorrow Bogey has to note, Calcavecchia and Fox start even.

07:48

Wiesberger on the way

In the second flight, one of two Austrians is now doing the rounds. Bernd Wiesberger is currently even and therefore significantly better than his compatriot Sepp Straka (+9), who started later. Wiesberger has company on his round from South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+1) and Sam Bairstow from England (E).

07:43

The first tees

The second round of the 150th British Open is underway! 1989 Open champion Mark Calcavecchia, now 62, puts his second shot close to the green and just short of the ditch where Tiger Woods’ ball fell yesterday. In return, he lets himself be celebrated at his last open by the few spectators who were already there early in the morning. Ryan Fox can even attack the green with the second shot and has the chance for a birdie.

07:37

British weather

After the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews showed up from two sides yesterday – sunshine in the morning and partly strong winds in the afternoon – British weather is announced today. The players have put on their rain gear, the umbrellas are open in the audience.

07:33

It’s about to start!

The second day will open in a few minutes! In the first flight today, the US-American Mark Calcavecchia (+11), Ryan Fox from New Zealand (-1) and the Australian Jediah Morgan (+7) pull over the facility. A little later, in the second flight, the Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, who was on course, goes on the round.

07:21

Woods before the end

Tiger Woods needs a dream round today if he still wants to make the cut. With the three-time champion, almost everything went wrong on the opening day when he took part in the Open for the first time after his serious accident in early 2021. Woods landed in the water right away on the first lane, started with a double bogey and then had massive problems. The 46-year-old only improved on the back nine, found three birdies and at least saved a 78 into the clubhouse. “Looks like I’ll have to play a 66 tomorrow to have a chance,” Woods said afterwards.

07:11

Who makes the cut?

While the leaders will most likely not have to worry about staying in at the weekend, a number of big names are looking to make the cut today. The top 70 of the 156 professionals who started will be allowed to tee off again in St. Andrews on Saturday. Big names like Henrik Stenson (+3), Paul Lawrie (+2), Jon Rahm (+1) or US Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick as well as Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry on par need to improve on the second round if they want to stay .

07:04

Young presents a dream round

After the first day of the golf classic on the Scottish east coast, American Cameron Young surprisingly took the lead. On his Open debut, the 25-year-old conjured up a 64-round on the green on the opening day, putting him two shots ahead of Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who was in a great mood recently. The 2014 champion has Cameron Smith and Robert Dinwiddie (both -5) on his heels, followed by eight players who saved four shots. In addition to world number one Scottie Scheffler, this also includes Barclay Brown, by far the best amateur on the first day.

07:03
