Former national player David Odonkor had to leave the jungle camp. Afterwards he found out about Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool exit – and was shocked.
David Odonkor is best remembered by football fans for the second preliminary round game at the 2006 World Cup. As a German national player at the time, he crossed to Oliver Neuville shortly before the end of the game, who then scored the winning goal. A few years have passed since then and the former BVB professional has ended his career. He was last seen by TV viewers in the jungle camp on RTL – but he had to leave on Monday evening.
Odonkor didn’t get enough calls. Previously, he was upset about fellow camp members who were too lightly dressed for him (you can read more about his “I don’t have to do that to myself” statements here). Following his exit from the jungle camp, t-online was able to speak to the ex-footballer and confronted him with the most surprising sports news of the past week: the farewell to Jürgen Klopp. The Liverpool FC coach is leaving the Reds in the summer.
“He will be the new national coach in the summer”
Odonkor admits: “This is an absolute surprise for me.” The stars who are in the jungle camp are isolated from the outside world. They don’t receive messages and can only communicate via the jungle telephone.
The former national player said to Klopp: “I haven’t noticed yet that Kloppo has quit. But then it’s definitely clear to me: he will be the new national coach in the summer.”
“I’m sure I would have gotten along well with him”
Odonkor explains: “He is absolutely suitable for it. For me he is the best coach Germany has. I would certainly have gotten along well with him as a coach, but unfortunately a few years have passed since my active time.”
It is currently unclear whether Klopp will actually become national coach. The 56-year-old justified his departure from the “Reds” in the summer with dwindling energy. Klopp explained in a video on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that he would like to lead a normal life and therefore wanted to take some time off.
Klopp has been the coach of Liverpool FC since 2015 and, among other things, won the Champions League with the team (season 2018/2019). The German team is currently leading the Premier League. Before his position in England, Klopp was coach of Borussia Dortmund and Mainz 05.
