Bowie would have been 77 years old on the day the name was changed.
A tribute to David Bowie was unveiled in Paris on January 8, 2024, as the city named a street after the musician. The “Rue David Bowie” is located in the 13th arrondissement in southeast Paris, opposite the concert hall where the singer last performed in October 2003 on his final world tour. On the day of the renaming, the British icon would have celebrated his 77th birthday. Bowie died of cancer on January 10, 2016.
This is how the renaming was celebrated in Paris:
The naming of the street honors the artist as a cultural icon, visionary and inspiration. The “Under Pressure” artist not only shaped the musical landscape, but also expanded the boundaries of art, fashion and creativity. His first gig in Paris in 1965 was his first concert outside of the UK. Rue David Bowie is located between two modern office buildings, including the headquarters of the newspapers Le Monde and L’Obs, and opens onto Avenue Pierre-Mendes-France, which will be connected to the future bridge which connects the avenue with the Boulevard de l’Hopital near the Austerlitz train station and the Pitie-Salpetriere hospital. Opposite the street is the concert hall where the artist performed on his last world tour in 2003.
The opening of David Bowie Street was accompanied by an event in the “Salle des Fetes”. A series of photographs and paintings about the singer will also be on display in the “Athéna Gallery” until January 14th.
