Dave Grohl, Chade Smith and Shane Hawkins Cover Rock Classics (Video)

With the cover band Chevy Metals, founded by Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, they played Bowie and The Police, among others.

It must have been a surprise night on Monday (August 21) for guests at the Rock N Roll Pizza Bar in Simi Valley, California. Cover band Chevy Metal’s performance there became a medley of well-known rock classics from David Bowie to The Police. As the band leader, Dave Grohl and up-and-coming rock artist Shane Hawkins hosted the evening. But not only that – because later the Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith and another guest joined the jam session.

The Chevy Metals were formed by the late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Since his unexpected passing, his son Shane has temporarily taken over his position in the band and has already impressed on drums in a tribute to his father. For the evening at the pizza bar, the band got support from Foo Fighter head Dave Grohl, who probably didn’t miss a live performance this summer.

The show’s 17-song setlist began with The Police’s “Next To You.” After more covers by Thin Lizzy and The Rolling Stones, the band descended into a small tribute to Van Halen. This was where the first surprise guest came in when Stephen Perkins from Jane’s Addiction took over the drum parts.

But that’s not all. After Grohl and the Chevy Metals played their way through songs by David Bowie and Led Zeppelin, the event drew to a close. In the encore, the next guest stepped onto the stage. He was none other than Chad Smith, drummer for the Chilli Peppers. Together they sent the audience home with their version of the AC/DC classic “Dirty Deeds Done Cheap”.
