Darts World Cup 2024: scandal over the World War comparison

The Darts World Cup 2024 in London has its first major scandal: of all things, after his third round win against Martin Schindler, the Englishman Scott Williams made a bad tone.

“I’ve never had the audience so on my side,” said Williams after the dramatic 4-3 win in a post-match interview on Sky Sports – and added: “I know that we have two world wars and won a World Cup. The German fans here were also huge.”

There was great criticism on social networks. Sky Sports presenter Anna Woolhouse felt compelled to apologize for using “offensive language” after her conversation with Williams.

A little later, Williams spoke up again via X (formerly Twitter). “Thanks for all the messages! A few bad words from some German fans, but I understand why! It was absolutely nothing personal, just a bit of mockery and banter with the crowd! I’m British and proud!!!! Round of the last 16, baby!!!!” the post said.

Darts World Cup 2024: Dramatic duel between Martin Schindler and Scott Williams

Another hour later, Williams wrote: “What I said on stage was a bit stupid. It happened in the heat of the moment after a crazy match against Martin. It was not intended to hurt anyone’s feelings, and I apologize very much!”

In the round of 16, Williams will now face the winner of the duel between the Australian Damon Heta and Berry van Peer (Netherlands). At least if his verbal misstep doesn’t have repercussions for the 33-year-old.

In fact, Williams and Schindler had a dramatic duel on the oche. A 2-0 set lead, the German record of 13 perfect 180 throws and a better average than his opponent were not enough for the German to reach the round of 16.
