Phil Taylor is the most successful player the PDC has ever seen. The now 63-year-old Englishman won the World Cup no less than 14 times. In the run-up to a new tournament in Alexandra Palace, Taylor, who ended his professional career in 2018, came up with a striking story in an interview with the British newspaper Daily Star.
As successful as he was on stage, he lived so frugally off it. “I allowed myself £200 a week, so I was always broke and even flirting with the poverty line,” he said. ThePower. “That 200 pounds could also have been 1, 2 or 3 million, but a hungry lion fights harder than a lion that has just eaten. You have to keep yourself hungry. I had thirty houses, was worth millions, but I think that basic salary was all I was worth.”
In any case, the separate approach was successful. Taylor also won the World Matchplay sixteen times, the World Grand Prix eleven times and the BDO (the other darts association) World Championship twice. Taylor retired from darts on January 1, 2018, after losing the World Cup final against debutant Rob Cross.
