How nice do you want to come on the field as a substitute? Darren Wevers gave the answer: come in and score immediately. Wevers was therefore the goldcrest for Be Quick 1887, which also won the second competition in the early season. Now 1-0 against Longa ’30.
The substitution was exactly 68 seconds old when Darren Wevers accepted a played ball, turned away and found the corner next to goalkeeper Dyon Esink of the guests from Lichtenvoorde with a slider. That was the 1-0 for Be Quick. ,,Yes, wonderful”, said the shooter afterwards. The youngster came from the youth of SC Heerenveen to Be Quick this season after a serious injury. ,,I had a serious ankle injury and was unable to play football for almost two seasons. Last week I fell out against Buitenpost for a while, now I got half a game. Very nice that I can be the match winner right away.”
The reference to Be Quick’s first game last week in Outpost was no coincidence. There too, the team of coach Paul Matthijs took the lead and there too the young team fought against the oppression with success to victory. ,,I actually didn’t want to coach as much as I have been doing for a while now, but I had to abandon that intention”, said Matthijs. “These guys need that support. In fact, they should be able to dominate a game themselves, but we are not there yet”.
The duel on the Esserberg, where the brand new artificial turf field was inaugurated in advance by sports alderman Inge Jongman on behalf of the municipality of Groningen, was equal for a long time. A shot against the crossbar by Joris Reiziger on behalf of Be Quick was just about the only real achievement of the first 45 minutes. Longa ’30 had a bit more control, Be Quick was a bit more dangerous during outbreaks.
Immediately after the break that heroic moment of substitute Wevers, who replaced the somewhat disappointing striker Guus Broekema. The guests from the back corner, who arrived in De Graafschap’s bus, took over command and a true defensive slaughter ensued from the perspective of the home team. ,,We should have been smarter and more ball-stable here”, said the critical Matthijs. “Especially when you are under pressure, you get spaces to play football through. That still wasn’t good enough.”
But Be Quick stood firm, kept fighting, and no one gave up in that work. The grumpiness of the guests increased both on and off the field. ,,You can’t lose against such a team, can you?”, a Longa supporter sighed just before the final whistle. The joy was great at Be Quick. ,,Two played, two won”, goldcrest Wevers laughed. “It is clear that we had to work hard, but we like to do that. Just have a nice afternoon like that”, and he hurried to his teammates in the locker room, where a sturdy blaster blared loud music. Party music, that was clear.
