Fabian Nürnberger from SV Darmstadt 98 may play for the Bulgarian national team in the future. The 24-year-old confirmed in an interview with the “VRM” publishing group that there is contact with the association. “In principle, there is interest from both sides,” said the Hamburg native, whose mother comes from Bulgaria. However, the formalities are “more complicated than expected”.
Nevertheless, a nomination in the upcoming international match period at the beginning of March seems to be within the realm of possibility. “It was already an issue during my time in Nuremberg (between 2018 and 2023; editor), but then there was a small change in Bulgaria, so contact was broken off for the time being,” said Nürnberger. Contact has existed again “for some time”.
If the midfielder were to be called up to the squad, he would now be one of the 15 most valuable professionals in the country with a market value of 1.2 million euros. The left-footed player moved from 1. FC Nürnberg to Darmstadt on a free transfer last summer, where he played eleven competitive games (one goal/two assists). He was allowed to play ten times from the start. Bulgaria, ranked 84th in the FIFA world rankings, clearly missed out on taking part in the European Championships in Germany next year – after seven group games in qualifying they are last with three points.
