Dark Tuesday; fewer road fatalities than last year

A total of 23 fatal accidents have already occurred on West Flemish roads this year. 27 people were killed. Compared to the same period last year, this is three people less.

“Cause of road user behavior”

Passenger cars, trucks and cyclists are particularly involved in the accidents. According to deputy governor Anne Martens, 80 percent of fatal traffic accidents are due to the behavior of road users themselves.

Deviating from the lane is number one in the top three causes of fatal crashes. Excessive speed and failure to give way are other common causes of fatal crashes.

In the case of fatal accidents, the province always makes an analysis of the road infrastructure. They then ask the road authority to adjust the infrastructure where necessary.
