Danny van Poppel closes Tour de France with 5th top-10 classification

Danny van Poppel finished seventh in the final stage of the Tour de France on Sunday. It is the fifth top-10 ranking of the sprinter from Moergestel. After the dismounting of Steven Kruijswijk and Mathieu van der Poel, Van Poppel is the only Brabant who has made it to Paris.

On the Champs-Élysées in Paris, the sprinter’s corps had to bow its head to Belgian Jasper Philipsen, who won his second Tour stage on Sunday. Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen came in second. Van Poppel was therefore seventh, a good distance from the winner.

It is the fifth time that the 28-year-old rider from BORA-hansgrohe has finished in the top 10 this Tour. With these top-10 places, Van Poppel was seventh in the points classification. Especially in the first stages of the cycling round, Van Poppel was several times close to an honorary classification.

Thus he became:

  • fourth in stage 2
  • tenth in stage 3
  • seventh in stage 4
  • fifth in stage 15
  • and thus seventh in stage 21

Van Poppel is the only rider from Brabant who made it to Paris this year. Steven Kruijswijk and Mathieu van der Poel dismounted earlier in this round.

Winner
The Dane Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour definitively on Sunday. The Jumbo-Visma classification rider only had to finish in Paris in his yellow jersey. From halfway through the Tour he took over the yellow jersey from Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. Van Poppel finished 109th in the general classification after 4.5 hours.
