He can bury himself in views: the mega-popular Korean artist V. But mega-popular Korean artists also apparently know where to find the Den Bosch artist and producer Absent Chronicles, aka Danny de Vlugt. Danny was allowed to produce a song for V. “This is really big.”
The frontman of K-pop band BTS has released a solo album. That won’t mean much to everyone, but K-pop (literally: Korean pop) is unprecedentedly popular. And not just in South Korea.
K-pop is also immensely popular in the US, Europe and other parts of Asia, especially among young people. Some songs are streamed billions of times on music services. The most famous K-pop band is without a doubt BTS.
Although BTS has now broken up, V released a solo album on Friday. So big news. The album has already sold 2.5 million times in one day. The song, called Blue, had to be made very quickly.
“It’s great to receive feedback from so many corners of the world.”
“I have worked on something before, but the speed at which this happened is truly unique,” says Danny. “It’s really cool to do. I often make music for other artists, but this is really big. It is great to receive feedback from so many corners of the world.”
Waiting for privacy settings…
Because K-pop is immensely popular – also in the Netherlands. “I recently saw that there were four K-pop songs in the Spotify top ten in the Netherlands. A lot of pop music that is now being listened to here was actually made in Korea. I don’t think we even really notice that here when we turn on the radio.”
By the way, Danny didn’t know for whom he had to produce the song when he received the assignment. “I was just asked to try something in a certain style and I was given some references. I thought it had something to do with BTS, but I wasn’t sure.”
“This is a little bigger than I expected.”
Later the bell started ringing when he became more clear about the singer for whom he wrote the song. “It was apparently V. Then I thought: this is a little bigger than I expected,” Danny laughs.
Danny thinks V is above all a charismatic artist. “He is known for his ability to dance, sing and interact very well with the fans. He also has strong opinions. This album is something that a huge fan base has been waiting for for years.”
