Daniil Medvedev wins Masters in Rome

Daniil Medvedev won the ATP Masters in Rome and is the new number two in the tennis world.

The 27-year-old Russian defeated the Danish shooting star Holger Rune 7: 5, 7: 5 in the final on Sunday. It was the 20th title in Medvedev’s career and the sixth at Masters level. During the course of the tournament, he eliminated Olympic champions Alexander Zverev and Yannick Hanfmann.

Medvedev kept his nerve in the important moments in a hard-fought match. The 2021 US Open winner also had the right answers to two breaks in the second set of his opponent, who had previously defeated Novak Djokovic.

After 1:43 hours, Medvedev converted his second match point and is now one of the favorites in the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year (May 22 to June 11).

Medvedev is second in the world rankings on Monday, overtaking Djokovic from Serbia. Medvedev had already won the 1000 tournament in Miami this year.

Rune, on the other hand, played the eighth ATP final of his career in Rome, the third this year after his tournament victory in Munich and his final defeat in Monaco.
