Dangerous Bloemendaalse Zeeweg is being overhauled: speed down

In the coming years, the province of Noord-Holland wants to tackle the traffic safety of the Zeeweg. Accidents happen relatively often on the road from Overveen to Bloemendaal aan Zee. Additional traffic signs in places where cyclists cross and a reduction in the maximum speed should make the road safer.

There has been talk for years about making the Zeeweg safer. Last year, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the road, a competition was held to reduce the number of accidents. Reducing the number of lanes and reducing the speed on the entire route from 80 to 60 kilometers per hour were the main recommendations.

Speed limit down

The speed on the Zeeweg will be reduced to 50 kilometers per hour between Camping de Lakens and Boulevard Barnaart. Earlier, the province said it was not in favor of a speed reduction. In addition, the province wants to place extra traffic signs on this section of the road to point out to motorists crossing cyclists. These changes will be implemented in the first half of 2023.

Major maintenance

The entire Zeeweg will not be tackled until 2028. Then maintenance is scheduled. According to the province, this is the time to take more drastic measures, if necessary. The province of North Holland does not yet know what these are. “In preparation for major maintenance, the province will start a trajectory study into the Zeeweg in 2023. Various ideas that were put forward in the competition in 2021 will also be examined in the trajectory study.”
