The Middle Ages lasted too long. We have neatly divided the time before and after that into eras of one or two centuries, but a book about ‘the Middle Ages’ has to cover a thousand years and quickly becomes too thick. And because the Middle Ages lasted so long, those books quickly become cluttered. But at least there is plenty to tell. Knights, heretics, conquerors, emperors – they all pass by in From Rome to Rome. Dan Jones may say too much about his homeland England, but he writes very visually.
