Last year, insurers spent an above-average amount of money on damage caused by weather conditions, such as floods or storms. In the whole of 2021, they paid out 465 million euros in damage caused by weather conditions to cars or buildings. Since 2007, weather damage costs an average of 325 million euros per year.
According to the Dutch Association of Insurers, which released the figures, the damage peaks are increasing. According to the umbrella organization, this is because extreme weather events are more common as a result of climate change.
Insurers are concerned about the impact of climate change. For example, the Dutch Association of Insurers already calculated a climate scenario from the KNMI and came to the conclusion that the damage caused by extreme precipitation among private individuals could double in the coming decades.
Feeling of safety
“If we don’t do anything, it will cost all Dutch people a lot more. Not only in money, but also in the sense of security, because the impact of weather damage on your home and your immediate surroundings is enormous,” says Richard Weurding, general manager of the Dutch Association of Insurers.
Last year, the major flooding in Limburg was a major loss. The total amount of insured damage before the flood rose to 210 million euros. The high water caused at least 180 million euros in damage to private homes or vehicles, the rest of the insured damage was suffered by entrepreneurs.
