One third of the compensation for the damage caused during the curfew riots in Eindhoven and Den Bosch in 2021 has not yet been paid by the perpetrators. The Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) reports this in response to questions from Omroep Brabant. The various judges have awarded a total of almost 206,000 euros to approximately sixty affected parties. More than 136 thousand euros of this has been paid, just over 66 percent.
Three years ago, on January 24 and 25, 2021, riots broke out first in Eindhoven and then in Den Bosch. The protest was aimed at the introduction of the curfew as a far-reaching measure to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
During the riots, shops were destroyed and emptied. Major damage was also caused to cars and street furniture. The CJIB is the organization charged with collecting compensation so that injured parties no longer have to do this themselves. The Dutch Railways suffered the greatest damage: two tons. According to a spokesperson, everything would have been reimbursed.
Two branches of Jumbo in Veghel were looted in station buildings. It is unclear what this has cost the supermarket group and what has been reimbursed. “We do not make any substantive statements on this subject,” was the summary response from a spokesperson.
Railway station
ProRail and the leasing company whose rail manager had a car in use were duped in Eindhoven for an amount of more than 56,000 euros. The lease car went up in flames near Eindhoven Central Station. Cameras and information boards were damaged at and around the station. According to a ProRail spokesperson, a financial arrangement has been made for each perpetrator.
Fundraiser
A number of entrepreneurs in the heart of Den Bosch did not have to recover damages from perpetrators. A fundraiser was held for them. The proceeds were used to put things in order.
Hundreds of people involved in the disturbances had to appear before the police judge or the Multiple Chamber of the court over the past two years. In some cases an appeal has been lodged. In one case a cassation was even filed. In 62 judgments, perpetrators were obliged to pay compensation, sometimes amounting to thousands of euros. This obligation has therefore not been fulfilled in all cases.
‘Apprehensively arrested’
The Association of Insurers previously announced that all curfew riots spread across the country caused approximately 1 million euros in insured damage. The estimate was made based on received reports. The repair and handling of the damage was handled expeditiously, the Association said at the time.
This umbrella organization of insurers, just like the CJIB, was unable to provide specific figures on the claims in Eindhoven and Den Bosch.
