The Manga author Leiji Matsumoto is dead. He died of heart failure on February 13 at the age of 85.
The artist drew the anime music film Interstella 5555, made in collaboration with Daft Punk. He tells a story about the songs on the 2001 album DISCOVERY. A snippet of the production was used for the official music video for the track “One More Time”. You can see how a band performs the piece in front of an enthusiastic crowd, but is then kidnapped. “Interstella 5555” continues the story of how the kidnapped band is exploited, but eventually makes it back to their home planet and makes music there.
Matsumoto published his first manga at the age of 15. He rose to fame in Japan in 1954 with the comedy series “Otoko Oidon,” which follows a young man preparing for the Tokyo University entrance exam. Other of his works are “Space Battleship Yamato”, “Galaxy Express 999” and “Captain Harlock”. His books have been animated as films or series and are also popular outside of Japan.
“One More Time” was released in November 2000 on the French house duo’s second album. It was her most commercially successful hit for a long time. He was succeeded in 2013 by “Get Lucky”. Daft Punk disbanded in February 2021 but remain active on social media and on behalf of managing their legacy. Thomas Bangalter will also release a new solo album in April 2023.
