Cyclist Riejanne Markus is riding in the Dutch championship jersey this season. During her training rides she regularly attracts attention. “They then ask if I am the real champion and then I can say that I really am”, says a beaming Markus.
“I’m really proud of it and it’s just very special to ride in that jersey,” Markus continues. The resident of the neighborhood of De Zwarte Kat near Amstelveen also says that the champion’s jersey has changed some things in her life. This way she is much more in the picture and her Team Jumbo-Visma team also expects more results from her this season.

Markus has already completed her first stage race of the year, but the season really only starts next Saturday when Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is held. “I hope the form is good enough to compete in the final”, Markus looks ahead.
“I’m really proud of it and it’s just really special to ride in that jersey”
The upcoming spring classics are a little less than the Ardennes classics that will be held in the second half of April. “Climbing is slightly different than in Flanders. The Amstel Gold Race with all the twists and turns I think is the most beautiful classic.”
After the spring classics, Markus is scheduled for La Vuelta Femenina. It starts on May 1.
“I hope to qualify for the World Time Trial Championships. That is a dream goal”
Time trial
Markus indicates that this year the focus is on time trialling. “That’s what I’m looking forward to the most. I hope to qualify for the World Championship time trial this year. That’s not easy in the Netherlands, but that’s a dream goal of mine. There are only three starting places for the World Championship. World champion Ellen van Dijk has its own place, so only two places remain.”
