Cyclist Pieters is conscious after four months of coma: ‘Amy recognizes people’ | cycling

Cyclist Amy Pieters is conscious after four months of coma. That reports her team SD Worx. Pieters, who was involved in a training accident near Calpe in Spain in December, has been in an artificial coma ever since. At the beginning of January she was transferred to the Netherlands.

Pieters can now communicate ‘somewhat non-verbally’, according to the team. “Amy recognizes people, understands what is being said and can carry out more and more assignments.”

Pieters (30) is the daughter of former national coach Peter Pieters. From her youth she combined the track with road cycling. In 2014 she took her first big win on the road with the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The following years followed victories in the Ronde van Drenthe, GP de Plouay and Nokere Koerse. In 2019 she sprinted to the European title on the road in Alkmaar. Last year finally took the national title on the road, a competition in which she had finished in the top 5 seven times since 2014.
