Cyclist died after he ended up in a canal due to a gust of wind

The victim was noticed by passers-by around 9.30 am in a canal along Waregemsestraat. It is therefore not clear how long the cyclist had been in the canal. Emergency services rushed to the scene to provide first aid. The sixty-year-old was taken to hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries. According to the initial findings, a gust of wind was probably the cause of the accident. Due to a strong gust of wind, the cyclist must have ended up next to the road, after which he could no longer get out of the canal on his own. The public prosecutor’s office did not send a traffic expert to the scene.
