Cyclist died after collision with van, driver had been drinking

A 69-year-old man from Valkenswaard who was seriously injured in a collision in Bergeijk on Monday evening, died as a result. The man was hit by a van while riding his bicycle. The driver had been drinking, police reported.

The accident happened on Monday evening around a quarter to six on the Fressevenweg in Bergeijk. Several emergency services responded and an air ambulance also landed. The man was taken to hospital by ambulance. He died there on Monday evening from his injuries.

After a breath test, the driver of the van was found to have 1 permille of alcohol in his blood. That is equivalent to about five glasses of beer. The man was arrested and interrogated. The police are further investigating the cause of the collision.
