Amy Pieters will fly back to the Netherlands from Spain today with a specialist team. The cyclist from Zwanenburg recently had a serious crash during a training session on the road. She lost consciousness and has been kept in an artificial coma ever since.
Cycling Association KNWU reports that Amy Pieters is currently breathing independently again and that her situation is stable. In Alicante, Spain, she underwent skull surgery to relieve pressure on her brain. Now on return to the Netherlands, the reigning Dutch champion will be further treated on the road. Only when Pieters wakes up from her coma do the medics get an impression of the consequences of her fall.
