Cycling: Ganna achieves fable world hour record

Italian cycling star Filippo Ganna smashed the hour record.

The two-time time trial world champion and Olympic champion in team pursuit covered an incredible 56.792 km on the oval in Grenchen/Switzerland and surpassed the record of Briton Daniel Bigham, which was not even two months old, by more than one kilometer.

Bigham, who works as a performance engineer for Ganna’s Ineos team, had also reached 55.548 km in Grenchen on August 19. Previously, the Belgian Viktor Campenaerts (55.089) held the world record for a good three years.

The only German hour world record holder was Jens Voigt, who in 2014 achieved the first record under the new regulations (time trial handlebars have been allowed since then) with 51.110 km. However, Vogt’s record lasted just under a month and a half.
