“It’s been in my head for years and now is the time to get out there.” And so Marc Kuijn leaves Lutjebroek around May 20 with a packed and empty bicycle. Final destination: the Asian country of Nepal. A journey of more than 10,000 kilometers.
A dream of 29-year-old Marc has come true with the cycling trip to South Asia. In recent years, the Lutjebroeker has often thought about a long bike ride. “I used to cycle,” he explains to WEEFF. “And also cycled a lot.”
But a trip like this has never been possible due to school and work, he continues. “Now I still have the chance and I want to take it.” Marc takes a tent and other camping gear with him on the road, so that he can sleep in deserted places. He also expects to spend the night in hostels.
“The goal is to arrive in Bardia, Nepal in the spring of 2024. But maybe I will continue cycling after that”
The Lutjebroeker now has a bicycle for a year and a half with which he has made camping trips to the Veluwe, among other things. In addition to the options to take luggage with him, he can charge his phone and power the navigation via a hub dynamo on the bicycle.
Bright Futures
Where Marc spent years thinking about a bike ride across at least one continent, that has changed since last year. In the past year, Marc also traveled to the Asian country of Nepal on his own initiative, where he voluntarily helped with the construction of various buildings.
In this way he became acquainted with the people in the area, the region and with the charity he wants to achieve with his cycling tour to support: Bright Futures of Bardia. “They help to offer children from the region a future, for example by building schools”, Marc explains. Marc hopes to raise 5,000 euros with his bike ride.
Spring 2024
The long journey to Asia will start around May 20. Marc hopes to be able to cover 50 to 100 kilometers a day in the following months. “In between you should of course also try to take a rest, and in some places you want to stay longer to see certain things.”
In the spring of 2024, the 29-year-old Lutjebroeker hopes to arrive in the Nepalese region of Bardia. What the journey will look like after arrival in Nepal is still unknown. “Maybe I’ll continue cycling after that,” says Marc. “I’ll see how it goes, and how I like the trip. It’s hard to say now.”
“Maybe I’ll be cycling there in the spring in a rainy season,” he continues. “Then it’s not nice to cycle through there and camp. But the chances are, as I experience it now, that I will continue cycling.”
