Cycling: Cyclassics – anniversary edition with delay

Status: 08/18/2022 10:29 p.m

After a two-year Corona break, the Cyclassics will take place for the 25th time in Hamburg on Sunday. NDR broadcasts live from the professional race from 2.30 p.m. Before that, thousands of hobby cyclists pedal on the “Jedermann” routes over 60 and 100 kilometers.

The pros have around 200 kilometers to cover and will start at 11.20 a.m. in the city of Hamburg. Via the west of the Hanseatic city, Schenefeld, Pinneberg and Barmstedt, you drive until just before Bad Bramstedt, before you go via Holm, Wedel and Blankenese (with two crossings of the Waseberg) to the destination on the Mönckebergstraße.

The NDR broadcasts live from 2.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m., the professionals are expected to cross the finish line from 4 p.m. Moritz Cassalette annotated. The ex-professional Fabian Wegmann is an expert in the transmission on the microphone.

Will Viviani win for the fourth time in a row?

One of the favorites again this year is the Italian Elia Viviani, who recently won the Cyclassics three times in a row – most recently in 2019. In Caleb Ewan (Australia/2016), Alexander Kristoff (Norway/2014) and Arnaud Demare (France/2012) are three other drivers at the start who were already able to triumph in Hamburg.

Top starting field: sprint elite is gathered

In general, the field is better staffed than it has been for a long time, the absolute sprint elite is present in Hamburg: the newly crowned European champion Fabio Jakobsen (Netherlands) is just as missing as the Belgian Olympic silver medalist Wout van Aert, who completed three stages of the Tour de France won and secured the green jersey. “I’m really happy that he’s here,” said Cyclassics chief organizer Oliver Schiek on Thursday.

Other top stars are Dylan Groenewegen (Netherlands), Jasper Philipsen (Belgium) and last but not least the Slovakian veteran Peter Sagan. Schiek also gave two-time time trial world champion Filippo Ganna a chance to win. The Italian could benefit from the fact that it is slightly winding through the Elbe suburbs instead of on the Elbchaussee: “He has a real chance to create something that is very unusual in Hamburg, namely a ‘breakaway’. So under certain circumstances not to arrive in the sprint. “

14,000 “everyone” at the start

The so-called “Everyman” are also back at the start after a two-year Corona break. In contrast to previous years, there are only two distances for the approximately 14,000 women and men this time, the long distance over 160 kilometers is omitted.

The hobby cyclists ride a circuit from the city in the west of Hamburg – the 60 kilometers lead to Holm, the 100 kilometers via Uetersen to Elmshorn. In both cases, the destination is Mönckebergstraße.
