David Lappartient, the president of the UCI International Cycling Union, has been elected a member of the International Olympic Committee. That happened during the 139th IOC congress in Beijing and was confirmed by the UCI on Saturday. The 48-year-old Frenchman has been at the head of the international cycling organization since the autumn of 2017.
Lappartient follows in the footsteps of Hein Verbruggen, among others. The Dutchman, who died in 2017, was president of the UCI from 1991 to 2005 and held IOC membership from 1996 to 2008, after which he was made an honorary member.
