Cybercriminals have a new tool, and it’s already worried the EU

Artificial intelligence could be used to produce more effective online scams and believable lies.

Europol’s headquarters is in The Hague, Netherlands. One of their key tasks is to prevent cybercrime. LEX VAN LIESHOUT

The European Union’s law enforcement agency (Europol) warns against misuse of the artificial intelligence chat program ChatGPT. According to Europol, artificial intelligence could be used in phishing, disinformation and other cybercrimes. Reported about it Reuters.

– ChatGPT’s ability to produce very realistic text makes it a suitable tool for phishing, Europol said in its report.

The victim of phishing usually receives a message that prompts them to open a web address or to create a chat connection between the victim and the fraudster. Recently, questionable activities have also taken place in Finland. The messages can be easily verified as scams because the language used in the messages is clumsy.

Viruses and propaganda

According to Europol, technically incompetent criminals could potentially also generate malicious code using artificial intelligence. In other words, artificial intelligence could be harnessed to produce computer viruses.

OpenAI, the technology company that runs ChatGPT, released its new and more powerful artificial intelligence earlier this month. The new artificial intelligence produces, among other things, text that seems more realistic than its predecessor. The authorities are concerned about how this could be used to produce propaganda or other false claims.

– This makes it possible to produce a certain ideological narrative with reasonably little effort, Europol stated.
