When is it, what do you buy, how many discounts do you have and how is it different from Black Friday?

Cyber Monday (or Cyber Monday, in the national adaptation) promises to arrive in 2023 loaded with discounts and low prices on thousands of technology-related products, something that is very attractive with the Christmas holidays getting closer and closer. What do you need to know about this commercial campaign?

Origin

Cyber Monday was born in the United States as an extension of Black Friday, that is, as the start of the Christmas shopping campaign that, in the North American country, coincides with the weekend after the Thanksgiving celebration. Although it shares many points with the aforementioned Black Friday, it also has certain differences with it.

When is?

In 2023, Cyber Monday will take place on Monday, November 27. That will be the date marked in red both for companies dedicated to the technology sector and for thousands of consumers who are eagerly awaiting a discount for that product they have been after for some time.

Similarities and differences with Black Friday

Although they belong to the same current of pre-Christmas promotion and consumption, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not the same. For starters, Black Friday deals are not limited to a single day, but typically spread throughout the preceding week. On the other hand, Cyber Monday is exclusively a one-day campaign, specifically the aforementioned November 27.

On the other hand, Black Friday presents a range of products that is basically unrestricted: everything fits into its offers. Fashion, toys, technology, household products… In contrast, Cyber Monday is dedicated solely to the technology sector. Although the variety is still wide, including mobile phones, computers, laptops, consoles, video games, gadgets, smartwatches and other similar products, the truth is that it is a campaign aimed at a more specific niche.

Furthermore, unlike the Black Friday, Cyber Monday presents a clear trend towards online shopping. It is a date dedicated to shopping online, while in the previous week visits to physical stores are part of the charm of this discount campaign.

However, it’s not all differences. It is clear that the spirit that animates both events is the same: pushing consumers to spread out their Christmas shopping to help end a better end to a month of November that is usually quite hard for businesses. And, on the negative side, it has also become clear in recent years that aggressive sales and discount campaigns are more about advertising than actual price reductions: in 2022 the percentage of products that had the highest sales prices during these dates low of the month It did not reach 2%. In fact, in many cases, beneath the sign with a juicy discount hides an increase compared to a few weeks before.

As a point of note, according to the price study carried out by the OCU during past campaigns, there are companies that do make discounts on a relatively significant percentage of items. Some examples are Fnac or El Corte Inglés.
